Melissa works with bronze, small mixed media drawings on plaster blocks and rolling pins. Experimenting when sculpting, new ideas and themes often evolve from conversations that she’s had. The naming of the works is important to her as it gives an insight into the ideas behind the work and expresses some of her personality and humour.
In 1986-89 Melissa completed the Industrial Design course at Wellington Polytechnic and in 1993 she started sculpting. In 2002 Melissa was awarded first-equal prize at the Pacific Art Awards for her sculpture ‘Experience is the Mother of Knowledge’. Judges for this award acclaimed her work as “exquisite and truly embracing of the theme.”
Her work is in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, USA, England and France.
