Farquhar(Te Atiawa) and Edwards (Ngati Tuwharetoa) met each other in Whanganui, 2005 at a hui to identify and establish a Maori Print collaborative. What they didn’t realise was that this hui was to establish a friendship that would see them support and inspire each other to show together on numerous occasions in the years that followed. This Exhibition titled Hoki mai, Kuhu Mai is the latest instalment of the two artists together.
‘Kuhu mai’ (come inside) refers to the work of Farquhar whose paintings and mixed media pieces are based on the idea of a wharenui and the elements within. The pieces are representative of aspects of art found inside the whare , the’ heke’(rafters) the tukutuku panels and the pare (door lintels ) are motivations for the works in the show .Sam lives in Helensville and is Scottish English Maori descent
‘Hoki mai’ refers to the work of Edwards whom is based in Whanganui and is a secondary school teacher. “This body of work is an extension of previous work, I continue to explore the ideas around layered communication, relationships and traditions. Hoki mai means to return and reflects a constant movement between spaces and roles.”
