Vanessa Edwards / Beccy Feather

Kanohi ki te kanohi - Face to Face

Kanohi ki te kanohi is a well known Maori saying that means face to face. This show is exactly that, with Vanessa's tattooed ladies and Beccy's blinged up characters.
In this show both artists explore identity through popularisation of cultures.
Beccy looks at bling grillz and the adoption of this trend by young people all over the world, and Vanessa explores the rising popularity of taa moko as a national expression of identity.

Text is incorporated in both artist work. Beccy’s grills display slang words collected from her travels, whilst the moko kauae in Vanessa’s work feature familiar te reo Maori kupu that most New Zealanders would have some comprehension of.
As a result the works talk to each other creating a dialogue that the viewer then becomes involved in as you come ‘face to face’ with each piece.

Kiwianarama Panorama

april 5 - 25 2008

Ruth Green Cole / Annie Sandano

Kiiwianarama Panorama brought  together two dynamic and unique artists, interpretting their own identity of the New Zealand image.

Ruth Green Cole takes New Zealand cultural objects and re-contextualises them into a contemporary interpretation of traditional maori textiles.

Her art practise is multidisiplinary, merging elements of hand made print, paper construction, weaving and installation.

Annie Sandano uses familar New Zealand symbols in refreslingly modern and lively compositions. Her vivid and bold images are imbued with a sense of fun and playfulness, and bring to the foreground a clean and uncomplicated use of traditional wood cut printing techniques.
